Our Role in Your Healthy Life

We are here to help you regain comfort and get back to living a pain-free and productive life. Patients come to us with a number of different body pains, and we offer treatment for these and other ailments. Our most common treatment areas include those associated with the following.

Neck Pain

Your neck consists of seven vertebrae, and your spinal cord and many major nerve roots pass through these vertebrae. Muscles, tendons, ligaments, and discs also help to support your head and work with your vertebrae to allow head, neck, and shoulder movement.

If you are experiencing neck pain, we will look for improper functioning that leads to subluxation. Simply put, subluxation means that one or more vertebral levels are not functioning correctly, leading to irritation, pain, headache, and other issues.

To treat these issues, we will find the specific area causing you pain and explain why this pain is happening, and what we can do about it. Dr. Routley will suggest new habits to avoid a recurrence of this issue. These may include an exercise program should your pain diminish, and health improve.
Back Pain

About 80 percent of Americans will suffer from lower back pain at least once in their life. It’s no surprise that this is one of our most common issues to treat. Muscle strains, tendon sprains, muscle tension, poor posture, weak or over-used muscles, trauma, disease, disc problems, swollen ligaments, loss of proper joint motion, and arthritis are just some of the possible causes.

We use a skill called adjustment or spinal manipulation to correct subluxation and relieve irritation. Adjustments helps to align vertebra or assists them in moving more in harmony. Once vertebral motion is improved, or the nerve interference is corrected, you will see your pain decrease/alleviate.

Dr. Routley will begin this treatment during your first visit. During the acute stages, he recommends a regimen of 15-20 minutes of heat to your lower back, followed by 15 minutes of walking, and ending with 5-8 minutes of ice. As your symptoms improve, you will receive an at-home exercise program to aid in the healing process and prevent re-occurrence. This also includes determining what the initial cause of pain stemmed from and how to avoid this in the future.
Shoulder, Arm, or Leg Pain
Patients often see us with pain in their shoulder, arm, or leg, but are unsure of why this pain started. This pain of unknown origin may be chronic or fleeting depending on the body’s position. You may have pain that begins when you try to go to sleep at night.

These pains may be coming directly from a tissue or joint problem. However, they may also be a result of neck or low back problems (arm pain and leg pain, respectively). During your examination, Dr. Routley will look for sensitive areas in your neck or back for subluxation: one or more vertebral levels is not working correctly and is causing irritation or preventing proper nerve function. It is this nerve issue that may be expressing pain in your arm or leg.

Through our evaluation, we will find the root of the problem and correct it. Once there is an improvement, we will provide a home therapy program to help strengthen your neck or back, which will continue to decrease any remaining arm or leg pain.
Headache Pain

Many of our patients see us for help in combatting their migraines, tension headaches, or cervicogenic headaches. All three of these are similar; they have similar symptoms, including pain in a band or one side of the head, nausea, sensitivity to light and sound, and irritability. Migraines and cervicogenic headaches are sometimes accompanied by auras, which can manifest as spots, zig-zags, or blind spots in your field of vision.

Luckily, our adjustment or manipulation treatments are proven to be effective. We begin these adjustments on your first visit, as well as encourage you to keep a diary of the time, location, activity, food, smell, stress, and other factors that occur when you have a headache. This helps us to pinpoint your triggers and aids in developing a plan for avoiding these in the future.

Many common triggers include:
  • Anxiety & stress
  • Fatigue
  • Missed or skipped meals
  • Hormones
  • Chocolate
  • Caffeine
  • Alcohol
  • Changes in barometric pressure
  • Changes in altitude
  • And other certain foods like those with nitrates or MSG
Scoliosis
This was once thought of as only spinal curvature, but we now know that there are many other factors to this condition. If all of the components are not addressed, treatment is ineffective. The degree of correction depends on how severe the disease is, how old the patient is, and how compliant the patient is with treatment.

Women are more affected by scoliosis than men are. Usually, it is discovered in adolescents through physicals and tends to run in families (though it is not evident in all generations). Common screenings for scoliosis view the patient from the back and look for a high shoulder or high hip (both may be present). Then, with the patient bending forward at the waist, the examiner will look for a “rib hump,” which is when the ribs on one side are higher than the ribs on the other. If these signs are noted, a scoliosis diagnosis is likely.

However, chiropractic uses a hands-on screening method to check for equal motion/movement of the spine and rib cage. If motion is not equal, a standing X-ray may be ordered to fully evaluate the patient.

Dr. Routley was board-certified in scoliosis through the International Scoliosis Research Center and can help properly diagnose this condition. We will determine the course of progression and identify the steps needed to see correction. The earlier the treatment begins and the closer the treatment is followed, the better and faster the correction occurs.
Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS)

Many women suffer pain and distress 7-10 days before menstruation, and some other symptoms include anxiety, irritability, fatigue, bloating, diarrhea or constipation, appetite changes, breast tenderness, cramping, altered libido, headache, backache, acne, and extremity swelling.

Research suggests that chiropractic care to correct spinal problems may be an effective way to reduce some of the symptoms of PMS, as demonstrated in past research projects. If you are looking for relief from your PMS symptoms, make an appointment with Dr. Routley, as he will work with you to find solutions. The first step in this process would be a complete spinal examination.

There are also dietary, lifestyle, and supplementary practices that have been shown to improve the estrogen/progesterone ratio and help to counter symptoms. These include:
  • Low-fat, high-fiber diets
  • Exercise
  • Dietary supplements
  • B vitamins
  • Vitamin E
  • Calcium
  • Magnesium and manganese
  • Botanical substances, including black cohosh, chaste berry, and soy isoflavones.
